Short answer
Wavefront aberrometry measures optical imperfections beyond glasses prescription — higher-order aberrations that cause halos and starbursts. When significant, data can import to MEL 90 or AMARIS for customised ablation — not every patient needs it.
What does this scan measure?
An aberrometer analyses how a grid of light points distort passing through your eye — producing a map used to refine excimer profiles.
What happens during the test
Usually performed during pre-op sitting at an aberrometer linked to laser planning software — takes minutes per eye.
Why it matters before surgery
- ✓Night vision symptoms — custom profiles may reduce induced halos vs conventional laser.
- •Higher prescriptions — surgeon may prefer wavefront-guided treatment.
- •Not mandatory for all — low prescriptions often do equally well with optimised conventional profiles.
What it cannot tell you alone
Wavefront maps change with accommodation and dry eye — scans must be taken under standardised conditions; poor-quality maps are discarded.
Procedures that use this platform
Technology serves the procedure — your surgeon assigns platform after scans, not before enquiry. These are the treatment pages where this device typically appears in your written plan.
Related conditions: Myopia, Astigmatism
