LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a two-step laser surgery. First, a state-of-the-art femtosecond laser (such as the Zeiss VisuMax 800 or Alcon FS200) creates a micro-thin hinged flap on the cornea. Second, an ultra-precise excimer laser (such as the Alcon WaveLight EX500) reshapes the underlying stroma to correct your focus. The flap is repositioned and heals within hours. Corrects myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism. Most patients achieve 20/20 vision and drive the very next day.

Both LASIK and SMILE Pro are outstanding options
Your natural crystalline lens is highly flexible and provides excellent reading focus. Both LASIK and SMILE Pro are ideal for this age group. If you have hyperopia or very high astigmatism, LASIK is the appropriate laser option. If you are myopic with dry eyes, thin corneas, or play contact sports, SMILE Pro is highly preferred. If you want the absolute fastest visual recovery, LASIK is slightly quicker.
LASIK or SMILE Pro — with honest presbyopia counselling
This is a transitional phase where the natural lens begins to lose its flexibility (early presbyopia). Both LASIK and SMILE Pro correct your distance vision perfectly but leave the natural lens in place. While distance vision will be crystal clear, you may still need light reading glasses for close-up work. Monovision can be discussed as an option for both procedures.
Lens Replacement (RLE) is usually the superior long-term solution
Once presbyopia is fully established, neither LASIK nor SMILE Pro can restore reading vision because they leave the stiffened natural lens untouched. For patients over 45 who want complete freedom from both distance and reading glasses, Refractive Lens Exchange (RLE) with a premium trifocal IOL is the recommended procedure. RLE also permanently prevents future cataracts.

LASIK creates a corneal flap which carries a very low but permanent risk of dislodgement from direct blunt force. Because SMILE Pro is completely flapless and leaves the cornea fully intact, there is zero risk of flap complications. Once healed, it is 100% safe for contact sports.
SMILE Pro is increasingly preferred
Both LASIK and SMILE Pro are widely accepted by aviation, police, and military regulatory bodies worldwide. SMILE Pro is increasingly preferred for special forces and pilots because it does not weaken corneal biomechanics. Always verify your specific regulatory body's guidelines.
Equal recovery requirements
Both procedures require you to strictly avoid swimming, hot tubs, and getting tap water in your eyes for 4 weeks post-op to prevent infection. After the 4-week healing window, there is no difference or restriction.
Both are excellent
Both procedures deliver outstanding night vision. LASIK night halos are common in the first 1–3 months and resolve in most patients. SMILE Pro has a similar profile but may have slightly less night vision disturbance in the early weeks due to the intact corneal surface.
